Postgraduate Studies

The GIS Department welcomes applications for MPhil and PhD studies in topics within comparative politics, international relations, public administration and political philosophy. Particular areas of interest include:

  • Chinese Politics and Society
  • European Integration and Governance of the E.U.
  • European Politics and Societies
  • Hong Kong Politics and Society
  • East Asian Politics
  • Sino-European Relations
  • Contentious Politics and Popular Protests

 

Research students are:

  • under the supervision of a principal adviser and a co-supervisor, selected by the Research Committee.
  • required to fulfil some coursework (at least 2 subjects for MPhil and 3 for PhD) which designed with their adviser.
  • invited to attend and contribute to the Research Workshop where their research designs, literature exploration, data collection and interpretation, and writing difficulties are addressed. The Research Workshop meets several times a year.
  • considered to fully contribute to the Department research activities. As such they are invited to all of them and encouraged to attend seminars, conferences and summer-schools in other universities. They benefit from the frequent seminars and conferences organized by the Department.
  • required to serve as teaching assistant and to provide tutorials to the Department. They usually teach 4 to 6 hours per week of tutorial in no more than two subjects per semester. Teaching is considered as an active part of their training, and conducted in active relation with their supervisors and subject instructors.
